NEW FILM BY ROBERT PENNYBACKER LAUNCHES FILM FRIDAYS
AT COFFEE TALK
“Break Through”, a new film by Robert Pennybacker, will launch Film Fridays at Coffee Talk in Kaimuki, Friday, January 11, 2013, at 7:00 p.m. Coffee Talk owner Liz Schwartz is organizing the series, which encourages local filmmakers to screen their works and enjoy a “talk story” with the audience immediately after the screening. Admission is free.
The 26-minute-long “Break Through” is the second installment of a film that is growing over the years and will eventually reach feature-length. The unifying element of the movie is that all episodes within it take place in urban Honolulu. Pennybacker wrote the story and was producer-director. Ken Libby was the cinematographer, and the film was edited by Daniel Bernardoni.
The title was inspired by the Doors song “Break On Through (To The Other Side)”. The film deals with five Honolulu women who are each trying to break out of various traps. A young widow (Donalyn DelaCruz) and her late husband’s first wife (Leonelle Akana) try to break out of the dead man’s post-mortem control of his funeral service. A mystery woman (Jocelyn Racoma), who hides her identity with a fedora, trenchcoat, and dark glasses, tries to break out of a strange, ritualistic relationship. A businesswoman (Lorraine Akiba) tries to break out of the mono-
tony of her daily routine. A composer (Jeanette Trevias) allows her new song to break free from the physical boundaries of her piano.
The film was shot in black and white in a style reminiscent of the silent era and the French New Wave movement of the early 1960s. The music is an eclectic mix of The Honolulu Jazz Quartet (led by Pennybacker’s brother John Kolivas); 60s singer-songwriter Laura Nyro; and an original composition by Trevias.
Film Fridays at Coffee Talk will take place every second Friday of the month.
